How is yoga therapy different from general yoga classes?

Yoga therapy is different from a public yoga class or private yoga session due to its collaborative working relationship between the yoga therapist and the client. The yoga therapist brings their knowledge and experience of yoga and assessments (seeing how someone stands, moves and breathes for example) to meet with the client’s needs, priorities and expectations.

What to expect in a yoga therapy session with me

No prior knowledge of yoga is necessary. I ask people to fill out my health questionnaire prior to the first session (of 90 minutes) which serves as the basis for a conversation with the individual about what they would like support for through yoga therapy.

A typical first session might involve looking at how someone stands, moves and breathes, setting priorities and starting to form some short-term measurable positive outcomes in agreement with the client. I then plan a practice for the client which might include elements such as movement, breathing and relaxations practices. The client has a chance to practice the plan in the session and will be given a written version of it to continue with at home.

Follow-up sessions last an hour, and I encourage people to have at least three to five follow-up sessions to measure, monitor, adapt and build upon practices as required.
